Finding Gratitude and Growth in Everyday Moments

silver colored heart lock bridge

Life is a journey filled with ups and downs, but it’s in the small, everyday moments that we often find the most meaning. As I reflect on the past few months, I’ve realized that life isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress, gratitude, and embracing the lessons along the way. Here are some key takeaways that have inspired me, and I hope they’ll inspire you too.

1. Celebrate the Milestones, Big and Small

Whether it’s celebrating 22 years of marriage or simply enjoying a quiet brunch with loved ones, life’s milestones remind us of what truly matters. As the saying goes, “Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.”

Take a moment to appreciate the people who make your life richer. Buy that small gift, share a meal, or simply say “thank you.” These moments of connection are the glue that holds our lives together.

2. Embrace the Journey, Even When It’s Tough

Life isn’t always smooth sailing. From battling the flu to feeling overwhelmed with work and responsibilities, there are days when it feels like the weight of the world is on your shoulders. But here’s the thing: every challenge is an opportunity to grow.

As I struggled through a fitness session, feeling nauseous and out of shape, I reminded myself that progress isn’t linear. It’s okay to start small. As the famous quote goes, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” So, take that step, even if it’s shaky.

3. Patience is a Gift—Give It Freely

One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of patience, especially with those we love. As our parents age, it’s easy to feel frustrated when they talk too much or move too slowly. But these moments are precious.

“Patience is not the ability to wait, but the ability to keep a good attitude while waiting.” Let’s strive to be kinder, more patient, and more present with the people who matter most.

4. Gratitude Turns What We Have into Enough

In a world that often feels materialistic and fast-paced, it’s easy to lose sight of what we already have. I’ve had moments where I felt broke, stressed, or uncertain about the future. But gratitude has a way of shifting our perspective.

“Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.” Take a moment each day to count your blessings—whether it’s a safe journey, a good meal, or the love of family. Gratitude is the key to contentment.

5. Trust the Process and Keep Moving Forward

Life is full of uncertainties—work projects, personal goals, and even health challenges can leave us feeling overwhelmed. But here’s the truth: we don’t have to have it all figured out.

“You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” Trust that every effort you make, no matter how small, is moving you closer to your goals. Commit to the process, and let go of the need for immediate results.

Final Thoughts: Live with Intention

Life is a beautiful, messy, and unpredictable adventure. It’s easy to get caught up in the noise, but when we pause and reflect, we realize that the most meaningful moments are often the simplest ones.

So, let’s celebrate the milestones, embrace the challenges, and practice gratitude every day. Let’s be patient with ourselves and others, and trust that every step we take is leading us somewhere meaningful.

As you go about your day, remember this: “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” Keep dreaming, keep growing, and keep living with intention.

Here’s to a life filled with purpose, joy, and endless possibilities!

“Your HABITS, Your Future!”

Before I forget…

A lot things happening in the past months and I have to get back in shape (exercise, writing and pursuing my hobbies…)

Two topics that I would like to write about and cannot find the time to expand on the points… I will park the points and notes here for reference when I want to write about them.

Notes #1:

Life is what meaning you put to it. Fake rules, perception and ideas.

e.g. Rat race – it is when you believe what you are doing is not meaningful.

What if in the so called rat race… some one benefitted from what you are doing? The person gets meaning of life because of you? Even if it’s a rat race based on other people’s perception… the more important thing (to me) is how you see yourself in the things you are doing… your acts, behaviour… service… who are you doing it for?

Notes #2:

About travelling… travel comfortable; clothing, travel pillow, refreshment kit…

Drink lots of water, sleep well, eat well, exercise… mental wellness.

Airport transfer; book, music, plan for work (if it’s business trip), plan for the trip…

That’s all for now…

Interesting project and learning

“You’ve probably got a device on you that can shoot decent video, so what’s stopping you?” – Steve Garfield

Last weekend, I went to do short video production with a good and talented friend of mine. The actual video was only a 1-minute video and the video shooting took four -(4) hours (not counting the pre-planning and editing of the video). Now I realise that creating content is not as easy as it seems.

12 Top Production | ideas | funny, memes, funny pictures

Anyhow, when my friend shared with me the edited video, my first reaction to watching myself in action… was to laugh at myself and at the same time, be impressed with what he had done with the video. Well done brother!

Meme: "Well done. I'm impressed." - All Templates - Meme-arsenal.com

What I have learned from this mini-project?

Planning is vital – no matter how we like the outcome to be natural or spontaneous, there has to be a planning element to make the video production a success. The overall concept and theme, the storyboard and some of the points to be covered as the message of the video.

Rehearsal is a must – I trust that the whole video shooting can take a shorter time if I were to rehearse it well before the shooting session. I thought it was going to be easy and took it for granted. Now that I have learned. One needs to rehearse, rehearse and rehearse to get the right feel and outcome.

Materials or I believe it is called assets need to be prepared – for the video editing to be of good quality, the assets have to be of high quality as well. Other photos, pictures, videos, scripts, and the design have to be shared/provided to the video editor for the video production to be great.

Trust your team – for me, this is the most important factor and if we are going to get our team to do it, we need to trust them fully to get the job done. We do not have to micro-manage the job nor chase after them. When they have less pressure from us, they are more creative.

Have fun with the journey – another important factor to consider in a video production project. Laugh, be curious, experiment, go with the flow… be happy.

Well, I have this belief that no matter what we do, there will be some who will not be agreeable to our concept or outcome. Anyway, just do it anyway and experience the journey.

I have been reflecting and whenever I have a chat with my kids, especially when it comes to their school assessments, tests, exams… the one question that I will ask them… “Have you done your best?”

I believe that… “Victory is knowing that you have done your best, if you have done your best, you have won!

And at times, I may forget and being critical to myself… with the outcomes that I have gotten, be it work, studies or personal… I need to be reminded on the question… “Have I done my best?”

Based on the knowledge, skills, experience and exposure that I have had… and if I have given my all, the best that I can… then I will learn from the results, then do better the next time. Or I can have the following options:

  1. Consult my inner circle and get some ideas (before, during and after) about the project that I am embarking in.
  2. Talk to my mentor(s) and coach(es) to gain some insights and discoveries.
  3. Do additional research with the time (according to the due date) that I have on the project.
  4. Ask more questions to myself, i.e., “What questions have I not asked?” “What can I do differently?” “What would this person ______ do?” “What have I not done yet?”
  5. Pray and meditate to get some inspiration, ideas and wisdom…

And at times, I realised that, that is the best I can do… thus I need to let go and let God.

All I can do is to put in my best effort with the time and resources that I have (to be resourceful)… and whatever the outcome is… it’s a feedback… and I can use the feedback to my future advantage, to be a better version and work towards to direction I want.

MUCH TO LEARN | MUCH TO LEARN, WE ALL STILL HAVE. | image tagged in mentoring, learning | made w/ Imgflip meme maker

I woke up this morning, smiling to myself and thank God for the past 46 years of my life. I am able to have another day to do what I want to do; to serve, inspire and learn. There is so much to learn, new day, new learning.

Some of my new discovery on learning tools is as below:

  1. PechaKucha
I find value in learning from other people’s sharing and the content is not long winded. Short and sweet, find the topics that you can resonate with and start learning.
  2. IdeaCity
This is the TED Talk of Canada and it’s not that formal. The content is broader and and more open.
  3. Ignite
If you only have 5-6 minutes of time (while waiting), you may want to look into this site… short sharing with some interesting learning content.

I believe that as long as we are willing to learn, there are a lot of great learning tools to be discovered. Some of the existing learning tools I like will be as below:

  1. Ebooks
As I put them in my mobile phone, I can take it anywhere with me, especially when waiting for food to be served in the restaurant, I can read or in the morning, when I wake up, resting… it can be a good time to read as well.
  2. Podcast
I can listen to the podcast while exercising (treadmill, walk) and cleaning the house. A great habit to stack with and can discover new ideas from listening.
  3. TED Talk
It helps when I need ideas for research and reminder on how I can present better.
  4. YouTube
Good or bad, everything can be found in YouTube, the choice is ours, what to watch and learn from.
  5. Books
In my humble opinion, nothing beats reading physical books. The feeling of flipping the page and highlighting when necessary. Great feeling to have!
  6. Online courses
Lucky to say that, the current workplace has a business account with Udemy… endless learning to choose from. Yahoo! There are a lot of other great online learning providers available.
  7. Workshops
Whether attending one or being a facilitator, I can learn a lot from observation, conversation and sharing during the session.

January 2022 is coming to an end… WOW! What happened? Do you mean the first month of 2022 is almost over and Lunar New Year is just around the corner? What have I done so far? (Sighing and letting go one big breath…)

Another chapter on growing (not sideways… of course!) in my journey in life. Getting ready for new adventures and learning more from others…

Recently watched a video by Nick Vujicic and he has brought to my attention the six -(6) areas in my life that I need to look into:

  1. Faith – what am I doing to build my relationship with God? Despite good or bad times, how am I doing in terms of my faith in God? I know that He is with me, no matter what.
  2. Family – what memories do I want to create with my loved ones? So that, when I look back one day… I have great stories to share and tell. What are some of the places and experiences that I can go to create? To me, it is not just about the place and spending money… investing quality time is more important.
  3. Friends – how many do I need in this life journey of mine? I believe I do not need many friends… a few good ones will be enough. I would rather invest my precious time for those who really know how to appreciate friendship.
  4. Fitness – how am I doing in terms of my mental and physical health? No money can buy my sanity and overall wellness. With great fitness, one can definitely enjoy more in life. What am I doing in order to have better mental and physical health? Trust is good, check is better… just this morning, I had a chat with a good friend and he has advised me to go for a thorough health check. At least gauge where I am and then work towards improving my fitness.
  5. Financial – how much is it enough? Am I living a comfortable life? How much commitment am I having? The media is constantly bombarding us to spend, spend and spend. When is it enough? We make the choice to buy or not… or will it be better to start investing? What goal am I setting this year in terms of my finances? What are the books to read to increase my level of knowledge and what can I do to improve my financial skills?
  6. Fun – how am I enjoying my journey pursuing the five things mentioned above? I believe one can have fun in doing anything… depending on the perspectives. It is a choice to make… whether the task is going to be fun or not. How am I going to be child-like (not childish)? Being curious and taking one step at a time with fun in mind.

I am sure different people have different opinions and ways to go about their lives. I just look forward to adding some spice (value) into your journey.

Let me know if you have other interesting ideas and we can have coffee/tea to discuss.

What advice would you give yourself?

“Many receive advice, only the wise profit from it.” – Harper Lee

Lately I have been thinking and reflecting… what advice would I give myself, if I were to meet my younger self?

The advice that I would give younger self will be as below:

  1. Study or work full time and not straddling; as the outcome will not be great for either one of them. Like one of my mentors said to me… “When you chase two rabbits at one time, you get neither.” A wise advice indeed.
  2. Save your earnings; a penny saved is a penny earned.
  3. Learn to say “NO”; set your boundaries and just say NO, no explanation needed.
  4. Do not waste your time in toxic relationships; learn how to exit earlier.
  5. Avoid being exploited; learn the cues and discover it earlier, rather than waste your time with these people.
  6. Read more and apply what you have read.
  7. Stay true to yourself and focus on your goals; persist until you make it.

There you are… some golden nuggets of wisdom to share with my younger self.

Being forgetful…

“Don’t blame the child for forgetting lessons; make the lessons unforgettable.” – Sonam Wangchuk

I have actually forgotten what title I should put for this blog… I wanted to write earlier but I forgot how busy I was… forgetting… is it an excuse or is it real that we forget?

Forgetful Me GIFs - Get the best GIF on GIPHY

According to Dartmouth university… There are seven -(7) reasons, Why we forget…

1. Negative self-concept: we think of ourselves forgetting things.

For me, this is true because I give power to what I focus on. When I keep conditioning (programming) my mind that I am not good at remembering… will it come true? Most likely… Well, it’s time for me to change my focus… and I can use some great tools to help me to remember.

2. We have not learned the material well.

If something is to be retained, it must be correctly, clearly and forcibly impressed on the mind. We must give it the necessary attention and interest. Self-questioning and spaced or periodic reviews are essential.

Learning is like cultivating a habit… the more you do (repeat), the longer it stays. Whether it is a good or bad habit (where you get outcomes that are not helping you), it will stick. Perfect practice, makes perfect.

3. Psychological reasons: defensive forgetting

Generally, unpleasant things are remembered better than pleasant things (especially by pessimists), and both pleasant and unpleasant things are remembered better than materials we are indifferent to.

Then, this is a matter of choice… and whatever the choice is, there will be a price to pay (outcomes and consequences).

4. Disuse

Memories fade away rapidly when not reviewed or used. But “forgotten” material can be relearned in less time than is required for the original learning, even after many years’ disuse. Even material that we do not relearn has undoubtedly been transformed into attitudes and values that form the foundations of our judgment. Education pays in spite of all the details that are forgotten.

This is like keeping things and after awhile, we tend to forget about them… then one fine day when you discovered the forgotten things… they are like hidden treasures… or in other words, once we learn how to swim or ride a bicycle, the skills will be there, we could be “rusty” and the skills can be retrained to gain the confidence and stamina.

5. Interference due to emotional problems, anxieties, distractions, intense concentration on something else, and intellectual interference

Intellectual interference or mental overcrowding can be minimized if we reflect on our reading and experiences, understand them, clarify them, associate, and organize them so they will not interfere with each other. We must avoid cramming and overcrowding our learning hours with unorganized material. There is more interference between two similar subjects than between two unlike subjects. (Follow study of history with chemistry rather than English history or literature.) Furthermore, there should be rest periods at intervals to allow the brain to lie fallow. Continuous undifferentiated activities apparently fight for a place in the memory. Since we cannot be awake without thinking, it should follow that there is more loss of memory for learned material when one is awake than when one is sleeping. (So study and then sleep.)

Learn to “chunk it down”… accomplish with small actions and as long as we keep moving, some how, we will be able to complete the journey / task. Take a rest if we must… to recharge, rejuvenate… then start again until we finish the journey / task. For me, sleep is important, days when I have lack of sleep, I will be experiencing brain fog, cannot concentrate and remember things… though some may feel that, if I were to put more waking hours to do the things I want to do… that is being efficient and that does not mean that we can be effective in getting better results.

6. Changed Cues

Recall what happens on tests. You studied the material one way, the test question was presented in another (cues were changed). If you learn material with too great dependence upon the phraseology of the textbook, you may be at a loss to remember some of the material if you cannot recall the exact wording of the text. As with your outlining assignments, restate or rephrase the ideas in your own words to insure remembering.

We can use tools to stimulate and remind us… triggering us to remember… some of the tools that I use will be:

  • paper and pen (sticky notes, cue cards, etc.)
  • alarm
  • to do list (there are many apps with our smart phones)
  • accountability partner
  • calendar (in the cloud, phone, computer or planner)

Experiment the tools that will be best for you. Never use, never know.

7. Lack of Attention and Effort

The art of memory is the art of attention-attending to the material WHOLLY. Moreover, there must be effort to remember.

When we put in the effort (taking actions), we will get the results (more or less)… as long as we keep moving, we will reach our destination (provided if we are moving in the right direction…). Thus, planning and preparation is key, then we start to move, we can always fine-tune along the way. We are the captains of our lives… we chart the course and live of lives.

Top 10 Habit Quotes I can relate to

What are your favourite quotes?

Don’t have one, perhaps you can start with one of these ten -(10) that I am about to share.

I will be sharing the top 10 habit quotes that I can relate to… after sharing the quote, I will put in some of my thoughts about the quote and what the quote means to me.

It may not resonate with you… anyway, these are just my views and opinions. Just enjoy reading and who knows, you can gain something from this blog. Happy reading.

Best Are You Ready GIFs | Gfycat
  1. “And once you understand that habits can change, you have the freedom and the responsibility to remake them.” – Charles Duhigg

I have a choice to change what I want to, and the choice that I have made, there is always a price to pay. The word freedom to me means having the power to make choices and responsibility means paying the price.

  2. “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks, but I do fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.” – Bruce Lee

Focus is what I give my attention and power to. When I am committed to doing one thing until I get the results, the outcome will be great. Meaning when I go deep and learn more about the topic of interest, I will gain more insights and information, versus learning briefly and scratching the surface.

  3. “In essence, if we want to direct our lives, we must take control of our consistent actions. It’s not what we do once in a while that shapes our lives, but what we do consistently.” – Tony Robbins

Consistency is key in getting results. If I were to be serious in getting what I want, I will need to put in the effort, commitment and daily deliberate actions. Then, the results will come.

  4. “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” – Will Durant

When we keep doing the things that we do, one day it becomes our reality. Like the habit quote #2, FOCUS and putting all my effort to get good at the thing I am doing. It is not one time action but consistent-continuous action that leads to excellence.

  5. “Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.” – Jim Ryun

There are times that I get really excited to start a new project or being given an opportunity to provide solutions to some challenges. And after a while, the level of excitement deteriorates… then how can I keep going? By having a process to make it a routine, it does not mean I have to complete everything in one go, I can always chunk-it-down to manageable activity, slowly and surely, as long as I keep going, it will be completed.

  6. “Failure is only postponed success as long as courage ‘coaches’ ambition. The habit of persistence is the habit of victory.” – Herbert Kaufman

During my journey in getting to where I want to be, I will face many disappointments and failures. What I have learnt from my past journeys, failure is part of the process and it is a feedback telling me that I may be focusing on the wrong action. As long as I keep going and having the right mindset to fine-tune (improve), I will somehow get to where I want to be and reap the rewards… hence there is a saying… “The journey is the reward.”

  7. “Positivity is like a muscle: keep exercising it, and it becomes a habit.” – Natalie Massenet

Like the weather, I will experience rainy season… no matter how long the season last, it will pass. The sun will come out again… so, it is a reminder to myself that no matter how bad the day is, tomorrow is a new day. I need to perfect practice being positive to face any adversity until I am used to being positive. And with the positive energy, I can inspire the people around me.

  8. “Chains of habit are too light to be felt until they are too heavy to be broken.” – Warren Buffett

I need to constantly remind myself and be mindful that, no matter how trivial the action or behaviour (where I am referring to negative ones) is… I need to ensure I do not repeat it so often until it becomes a part of me. When it does become a habit, it will be difficult to get rid of it.

  9. “We will be more successful in all our endeavors if we can let go of the habit of running all the time, and take little pauses to relax and re-center ourselves. And we’ll also have a lot more joy in living.” – Thich Nhat Hanh

There is no point for me to keep running and not stop to smell the roses along the way. There is a need for rest, recharge and rejuvenate to journey in life’s marathon… normally there will be pitstops and checkpoints… and after having enough rest, I should be continuing my journey to excellence.

  10. “Make it your habit not to be critical about small things.” – Edward Everett Hale

There was an old wise person who used to tell me, “Do not sweat the small stuffs…” Most of my worries were caused by trivial events and people who do not mean much to me. As it is a journey in life, I will definitely go through and meet all sorts of people. As long as I keep my chin up, better days will be around the corner.

The 5C’s of Remote Team Working

In teamwork, silence isn’t golden, it’s deadly.” — Mark Sanborn

Well, it has been more than a year since the new normal started, and for the past two months, I have been working from home (WFH). Having a lot of virtual meetings and engagement with the team remotely.

Thought GIFs - Get the best GIF on GIPHY

And I have been thinking, what is a good topic to write… Ah… yes, I should write about Remote Team Working. So, based on what I have been experiencing so far WFH… I have summarised the learning into five -(5) C’s as below:

Are You Ready For Love GIFs - Get the best GIF on GIPHY

#1 – Check-ins

There are many ways for the team members to check-in on each other and the projects / tasks that they are working on. Some organisations use Slack, Trello, Workspace and etc.

Currently, my team will be using our server / portal to check-in (to sign-in for work), to check on the team member, we normally will have our work chat group, virtual meetings, emails, shared documents, and phone calls.

Especially in times like this, we will be checking one another more frequently (with the intent to care and concern about the well being, not otherwise).

A word of encouragement during a failure is worth more than an hour of praise after success.” – Unknown

#2 – Communicate

Communication is key, especially when the team members do not get to see each other on a daily basis… and I have been emphasising on building trust with the team (for longer term results, anyone can drive and demand for results in the short term basis). The team has to be having psychological safety to be vulnerable and sharing their thoughts, when any mistakes are identified.

My opinion, the next best method to communicate apart from face-to-face will be video call / conference, then followed by call and then only messaging. Another important point (at least for me), will be to clarify and confirm, when in doubt and never assume.

Questions are never foolish. Stupider are those who never ask anything.” – Tamuna Tservadze

How To Ask Effective Questions – The Curious Maverick

#3 – Consistency

I learnt in one of my training sessions that an airplane can only take off with momentum (not starting and stopping). My point of view, to keep the team consistent and communicated, there has to be a way to meet consistently. Meeting at least once a week in the weekly catch-up meeting and at times having ad-hoc meeting when there is an emergency or real need.

One more thing, as a leader, the direction given to the team has to be clear and consistent too. Imagine how the team is going to perform when they do not have proper direction nor consistent messaging.

Consistency Is Key Jessa Bigelow GIF - ConsistencyIsKey JessaBigelow InkMaster - Discover & Share GIFs

Success isn’t always about greatness. It’s about consistency. Consistent hard work leads to success. Greatness will come.” – Dwayne Johnson

#4 – Continuous improvement

Many people are struggling with their work (or lack of it) during this time of crisis. A lot needs to be done to keep business and the people motivated. I find myself an increase need to improve day by day. There are various ways to improving ourselves. Some past articles around this topic as below:

#5 – Celebrate

Find reasons to celebrate, especially in times like this, there are many people who are feeling miserable and may not realise what they are doing is bringing value to the team. My perspective of being a good leader, find ways to recognise the team member, be it the effort or time put in for the task. We give power and energy to what we focus on. Why not focus more on the positives?

There you go… the 5C’s of Remote Team Working… thank you for reading and I believe there are more than these 5C’s. Go ahead and experiment some of them and let me know the results.

Looking forward to your success and we can always meet virtually to celebrate the success. Cheers!
